Celebrating the new leader in NHL goal scored.
Taking a break from all things Colorado Avalanche, the weekend all the hockey world focused their attention on Alex Ovechkin’s pursuit of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s NHL goals record. And that he did with signature record-tying then breaking power play goals to make Ovi the NHL’s all-time goals leader.
First for number 894 there was the record-tying power play goal Ovechkin scored against Chicago. He could have gone for an empty netter in a hat trick but he stayed off the ice as Washington wrapped up the 5-3 win.

In signature fashion just one game later Ovechkin tallied number 895 from his spot at the left circle on the power play complete with an epic celebration joined in with his Capitals teammates. Tom Wilson and Dylan Strome will go in the record books as those who assisted on the historic goal.

Former teammate Nicklas Backstrom was on hand to celebrate Ovechkin’s achievement as well as his family, Gretzky and Commissioner Gary Bettman.
Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin shared an emotional moment in the locker room after Ovi broke the NHL goals record.
The two hugged and held up the milestone 895-goal puck for a photo.

Now the question is what will Ovechkin set the new goals record at when he retires? Can he get to 1000?
