Chavous is one of the best rushers to step on the field for the Broncos and should get his spot in the ROF.
Good morning, Broncos Country!
Barney Chavous is one of the best players in Denver Broncos history.
He’s also one of the most under-appreciated.
When the Mile High Report staff put together its top 50 players in Broncos history last year, Chavous came in at No. 39. For a player who ranks fourth in franchise history in sacks.
To really hammer home how under-appreciated Chavous is, the former defensive end also isn’t in the Broncos Ring of Fame. But Chavous was inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 2024. Make it make sense.
That must be corrected this year. Just as the Ring of Fame selection committee did last year when it finally inducted Steve Foley and Riley Odoms. Chavous should be the next player to get his place in the Broncos Ring of Fame.
One of the great aspects of being a Broncos fan is the history and tradition. So many great players and people helped to make this franchise what it is today. Chavous is one of those players. He was a key member of the Orange Crush defense and helped get the franchise to its first Super Bowl in 1978.
Chavous is a member of the Broncos Top 100 team and played all 13 NFL seasons in Denver and 185 games. He was selected with the No. 36 pick in the 1973 NFL Draft out of South Carolina. When Chavous retired, he was the franchise leader in sacks. He’s one of just four players to reach 75 sacks with the Broncos. As it stands, Chavous sits at No. 4 with 75 sacks behind Von Miller (110.5), Simon Fletcher (97.5), and Karl Mecklenburg (79.0).
As teammate and Broncos ROF cornerback Louis Wright told 9News about Chavous:
“Barney is s-o-o-o underrated. To me, Barney was one of the best in the league because he never got beat one-on-one. People don’t appreciate that. Unless you jump up and down, make a lot of noise, like Lyle did on the other side. But Barney was like the solid rock. The guy who held it together.’’
