After dominating the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles are now poised to host the NFL’s season opener to kick off the 2025 campaign next fall.
The Denver Broncos are among the list of teams scheduled to play in Philadelphia next season, making them a candidate to play in the opener.
In addition to the Broncos, the Eagles will also host the Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Rams, Chicago Bears, Las Vegas Raiders and, of course, their NFC East rivals — the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Commanders and New York Giants.
Since the league introduced a standalone opening game in 2002, there have only been three divisional matchups picked for the opener, and two of them came from the NFC East (Commanders-Giants in 2008 and Cowboys-Giants in 2012).
So it’s possible that the league could pick the Cowboys or Commanders for the 2025 opener. The Lions, who are 27-7 over the last two seasons, would also be an intriguing option. The Rams recently played in an opener in 2022 and the Bears have Caleb Williams. The Raiders might become more intriguing if they select a QB early in the 2025 NFL draft.
Denver, meanwhile, is coming off its first playoff appearance since 2015 with a promising young quarterback in Bo Nix. The Broncos might not be the favorite to play in the opener, but they’re certainly in the mix.
