The Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs are scoreless after one quarter, but Denver is threatening to start the second.
As the visiting team, the Denver Broncos got to call the coin toss. They lost the call and the Kansas City Chiefs elected to defer possession to the second half bringing Bo Nix and the offense out to start the game.
They needed a good start to the game, but a Courtland Sutton drop on second down would lead to a three-and-out to start the game. The Broncos defense, meanwhile, got Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs into a third and 10, but Mahomes would scramble for the first down.
They’d face another third down on the next set of downs and Mahomes found Travis Kelce for a first down to midfield. However, on the third third down of the drive, Zach Allen punched through the line to sack Mahomes to force the punt.
On their second possession, the Broncos started off with a toss to Marvin Mims Jr. that gained a couple. Nix got his first completion on the next play on a pass to Lucas Krull for a first down. Unfortunately, Nix got caught flat footed for a 17-yard loss that killed the drive.
It seems the Broncos defense is able to push the Chiefs into a third down on every fresh set of downs they get. The force the three-and-out on the Chiefs next drive.
With the first quarter winding down, the Broncos get their third attempt at the offense in this game. Marvin Mims took a handoff outside for a 13-yard gain to kick the drive off. Audric Estime then took a handoff inside for an 8 yard gain. Estime then fought through the muck on the next play for 6 yards and another first down.
Bo Nix from the shotgun, found Devaughn Vele for another decent gain for 12 yards and a first down putting the Broncos just outside field goal range. A botched snap and then an illegal man downfield put the Broncos drive on the ropes, but Nix found Adam Trautman who turned upfield for a 34-yard gain to the Chiefs 10-yard line.
They would start the second quarter in prime scoring position.
