Sean Payton is beginning to rebuild his Denver Broncos coaching staff.
After firing two coaches and losing three other coaches to other clubs this offseason, Payton had five positions to fill this spring. Now it’s down to three.
First, the Broncos replaced former special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica by hiring Darren Rizzi, a big signing for Payton’s staff. Up next is an assistant special teams coach to replace Chris Banjo.
Phil Galiano was initially believed to be a top candidate for the job, but he was promoted to special teams coordinator with the New Orleans Saints. With Galiano unavailable, attention turned toward Marwan Maalouf.
Maalouf is set to land in Denver as Rizzi’s new assistant special teams coach, according to NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. Maalouf, 48, was an assistant under Rizzi with the Miami Dolphins from 2013-2018.
Following that stint in Miami, Maalouf was a special teams coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings from 2019-2020. After Rizzi was promoted to interim head coach with the Saints last fall, he brought in Maalouf as an assistant again.
Rizzi and Maalouf will now be reunited for a third time, and the Broncos are down to three positions to fill on Payton’s staff: tight ends coach, passing game coordinator and inside linebackers coach.
