Broncos dominate Chiefs’ backups to secure first playoff berth since 2015 season

The Denver Broncos blew out the Kansas City Chiefs in a 38-0 home win to finish the 2024 season with a 10-7 record and a playoff berth.

The Denver Broncos needed a win to secure their first playoff berth since the 2015 season. Fortunately for them, the Kansas City Chiefs rested a bulk of their best players and Denver was able to cruise to that 10-7 record with a blowout home win to punch their AFC playoff ticket.

As a new grandpa myself, I really loved this comment. My oldest daughter was 15 the last time she saw me in Broncos playoff mode and my other daughter was 5. It’s been a long time, Broncos fans. Let’s enjoy the next week and every week after for as long as this playoff ride lasts for the 2024 Broncos.

First Quarter

Whatever trepidation some fans had over the Chiefs behind Carson Wentz evaporated quickly as Bo Nix and the Broncos offense came out dominating the Chiefs backups on defense. They started off fast capping their first drive with this 32-yard screen to Marvin Mims Jr. for the first touchdown.

Then after forcing a three-and-out on defense, the Broncos got a second drive in where the big play came in the form of a 47-yard bomb from Nix to Courtland Sutton that Nix would follow up with a 10-yard strike to Sutton for the game’s second touchdown.

Denver dominated on both sides piling up 187 yards of offense while only giving up 13 on defense. They’d have 10 first downs to the Chiefs 1 and ended the first quarter driving again.

Second Quarter

That drive would end up taking over 11 minutes of game clock off the board and end keeping Nix’s completion streak alive on a crazy double-tip drill that ended with a Devaughn Vele touchdown to put Denver up by three touchdowns over the Chiefs.

The Chiefs tried to get on the board late in the second quarter, but a Harrison Butker missed field goal gave Denver one more chance to score before halftime. With less than 10 seconds left in the half, Nix was under pressure and couldn’t get the ball off with enough strength to a wide open Javonte Williams that would have walked into the end zone. Instead, they settled for a Wil Lutz field goal to increase their lead to 24 at the half.

Bo Nix was 18/19 for 215 yards and three touchdowns for a 153.4 passer rating in the first half.

Third Quarter

The game went as you’d expect given the Chiefs rested a large majority of their starters in this game. The Broncos offensive onslaught slowed a bit in the second half, but that changed late after this dart from Bo Nix to Devaughn Vele for a 32-yard gain.

A few plays later, Nix would hit Marvin Mims Jr. on a swing pass where Mims would fight his way for a seven yard touchdown to put Denver ahead by more than enough to punch their playoff ticket.

Fourth Quarter

The Broncos starting offense capped their day with another touchdown. Rookie Audric Estime punched it in from one yard out to put Denver up by 38.

Good teams should dominate when the other side is playing their second and third string players. The domination continued from start to finish and the Broncos secured their first double-digit win season since 2015 and punched their playoff ticket to face the Buffalo Bills next week!
