The Denver Broncos need to address the safety position this offseason — coach Sean Payton has said so himself.
Perhaps Talanoa Hufanga could be the solution.
Mason Cameron of Pro Football Focus recently published a list of potential spots for the NFL’s top free agent defensive backs, and he has Hufanga linked to Denver.
“The Broncos possessed one of the strongest coverage units in the NFL this past season but had a clear weak link in P.J. Locke, whom the Bills exposed in the wild-card round,” Cameron wrote on PFF’s website. “Hufanga projects as an upgrade over Locke in Denver’s single-high coverages, if the former can stay healthy.”
Hufanga made the Pro Bowl and earned an All-Pro nod in 2022 with the San Francisco 49ers, but he has struggled to stay healthy since then. The 25-year-old safety missed seven games in 2023 and 10 games last fall.
Through four years with the 49ers, Hufanga has totaled 219 tackles, 14 pass breakups, seven interceptions and two sacks in 49 games (37 starts). Spotrac.com has estimated an $11.9 million per-year market value for the safety. It remains to be seen if the Broncos would be willing to spend that kind of money on a defensive back with a history of injuries.
