Could the Broncos top receiver be on the verge of receiving an extension?
We saw Broncos veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton sit out voluntary workouts last season in hopes of getting an extension from the Broncos. While he did not get that extension, the team did restructure his contract which gave him a pay raise last season. Now, with Sutton entering the final year of his deal, he is looking to receive that extension from the Broncos once again.
George Paton wants to keep Courtland Sutton in Denver. He will meet with Sutton’s agent this week at the combine

Denver Broncos General Manager George Paton met with the media on Tuesday and was asked about Sutton’s contract status with the team. He told reporters that Sutton is a team captain and that they want him on the team before adding that they will have those discussions at the right time.
“Courtland Sutton is one of our guys. He’s a team captain. I’ve said this for a couple of years in a row, we want him here. We’ll have those discussions at the right time.”
Paton was then asked if he would meet with Sutton’s agent in Indianapolis and he said he would indeed meet with him at the Combine. So, we’ll see if the two sides can agree to a contract extension.
Sutton is entering the final season of a four-year, $60.8 million deal and has earned a contract extension from the Broncos. After a promising start to his career, he struggled to come back from an ACL injury, and combined with poor quarterback play, he was beginning to be viewed as a disappointing contract extension by the Broncos. That all changed after the Broncos brought in head coach Sean Payton. In two seasons in Sean Payton’s offense, Sutton has totaled 140 receptions for 1,853 yards, and 18 touchdowns. He has become the Broncos’ trusted number-one receiver, someone who makes multiple insane touchdown catches a season, and Bo Nix’s most trusted target.
He is a 29-year-old receiver who will turn 30 years old in the middle of the season, so he still has a few productive years ahead of him. Locking him up for another two or three years would be ideal and keep him around for most of Bo Nix’s rookie contract.
We have seen Sutton’s name floated around in trade rumors in recent years and barring these contract talks going sideways, I believe that ship has sailed. Sutton has earned his keep with the team, is a team leader, and has a connection with your young quarterback. It’s time to sign him to an extension and let him help Bo Nix continue to grow as a quarterback moving forward.
What do you think Broncos Country? Should the Broncos sign wide receiver Courtland Sutton to a contract extension this offseason?
