Trying to strike lightning in a bottle for a consecutive season on Day 3 of the NFL draft, Denver Broncos general manager George Paton selected safety Delarrin Turner-Yell in the fifth round last month.
It’s a move akin to Paton “poaching” safety Caden Sterns in the fifth round of last year’s NFL draft. While OTAs start this next, the Broncos hosted their rookies for rookie minicamp two weekends ago.
And it’s safe to say Turner-Yell is turning heads. Although the rookie knows his best shot — as a Day 3 draft pick — to make the Broncos’ Week 1 roster is contributing to special teams. That said, newly-hired defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero is impressed with Turner-Yell’s confidence and communication on defense thus far.
“Coming out of college, [he was a] good player, very good leader,” Evero said last month. “The one thing that I’ve noticed, and you saw on tape as well, is his command. He comes out here and even though he doesn’t know the defense very well, he’s a sharp kid and he’s only been exposed for two days but he just has command in everything does.
“There’s confidence in everything he does. That’s the most important thing as a safety — just that communication ability. He’s been very impressive so far.”
