It feels inevitable that the NFL will eventually switch to an 18-game season.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has already hinted that the league could add an extra regular season game and remove a preseason game in the not-too-distant future.
Such a change would need approval from the NFL Players Association in the collective bargaining agreement, and it will likely be a key point of discussion during the next round of CBA negotiations.
Speaking to Front Office Sports at the Super Bowl earlier this month, Denver Broncos president Damani Leech was asked about the possibility of an eventual switch to an 18-game season.
Leech somewhat danced around the question — saying it’s not a decision he makes — but he did note that he will prepare for the possibility of a switch.
“I think with my role, and a lot of team presidents, what we do is — you know, obviously those decisions are made at a league and players association level,” Leech told FOS. “It’s our responsibility (as executives) to plan, be prepared for what might happen.
“Whether that’s expansion of the regular season, whether that’s more international games. All those things we think about as we sort of do five-year look aheads, to make sure we’re best positioned to be successful.”
Leech joined the team as president in 2022. He oversees the club’s business operations and fan engagement.
