The Denver Broncos and Courtland Sutton have reportedly have plenty of good-will to start the contract talks season. Sutton will report to offseason program on April 21st.
It has been a relatively quiet start to the league year after that flurry of critical free agent signings by the Denver Broncos. As the team shifts towards the 2025 NFL Draft preparation, the looming contract situation with Courtland Sutton has also flown under the radar with us fans.
Mike Klis of 9News reported this week that both sides have had enough ‘good-faith bargaining discussions’ that there is zero concern about Sutton skipping the Broncos’ offseason training program that begins on April 21st.
It’s important to note that Sutton skipped this program last year wanting an extension, but ultimately reported to mandatory minicamp. He signed a revised 2-year contract that didn’t include any new guarantees, but added the potential for $1.5 million in performance-based incentives.
He bet on himself and it paid. Going into the final game last season, Sutton needed 82 yards to get the final $500,000 of the $1.5 million in incentives. He finished the game with seven catches for 98 yards and a touchdown.
In fact, Sutton has rekindled his career with his pairing with Bo Nix. Since topping 1,000 yards in 2019, Sutton had failed to top 830 yards receiving in each of the four years since. Heading into 2024, it sort of looked like his career was winding down as he approached 30. Instead, he topped his career best in receptions and finished with over 1,000 yards and 8 touchdowns. His 18 touchdowns over the last two seasons is more than his first five seasons in the NFL.
That contract extension is certainly coming. At 29, he’s at his peak and while the age wall may be approaching, there is still plenty of good football left for Sutton.
