What the Denver Broncos do about their stadium situation could come to a head.
As Broncos president Damani Leech told Front Office Sports in an interview during Super Bowl week, the franchise will have to make a decision “pretty soon.”
When Leech said the current lease expires after the 2030 season, the interviewer said, “So you got time.”
Leech responded with the following:
“No, we don’t actually. It takes four years to build (a new stadium). You start to back that up, and we feel pretty soon we need to figure out what we’re doing. That being said, we can extend the lease if we need to. But we really are very laser-focused on this and trying to do what’s best, not just now for the Broncos but the next 30 years.”
As of now, there appear to be three options for the Broncos stadium decision:
- Stay at the current site and either renovate the current stadium or build a new one.
- Find another place near downtown, specifically the possibility of a new location between the 6th Avenue and 8th Avenue exits off Interstate 25 known as the Burnham Yard.
- Build a new stadium in the Lone Tree suburb.
As 9News reported back in early January, 9NEWS Sports has learned Broncos executives and ownership have considered Lone Tree — including having conversations with city officials in recent months — as a possible location for a new stadium.
Given the team headquarters’ location in Dove Valley, a Lone Tree stadium would be just miles away, so that is a definite possibility. You also have numerous ways to get to the stadium, whether driving yourself or using public transportation. There are I-25, I-225, C, and E470, plus public transport with Light Rail lines and bus routes. For fans in Northern Colorado, it would be a little longer and tougher to get to a Lone Tree Stadium location.
As for the Burnham Yard location, 9New said:
“Rich in history from its early days as a key railyard during Denver’s growth, Burnham Yard could be an intriguing option with its close proximity to the current stadium and potential for a stadium-anchored, mixed-use development. Revitalizing a somewhat dormant area is what Coors Field did to a once-abandoned railroad area near LoDo.”
In terms of the current location, there were already plans to renovate the areas around the current stadium into a mixed-used entertainment development. But those plans were put on hold since the organization’s stadium plans remain up in the air.
The current location is a definite attraction, given that the Broncos have played there since their inception in 1960. The current stadium just had its 24th season and has undergone numerous renovations over the years.
What is also interesting about all of this is the lack of any discussion about the area around Denver International Airport. And thank goodness, since the logistics to get to a stadium out there would be a nightmare for everyone.
As Leech said to FOS:
“All things are on the table. And we mean that sincerely. So actively studying what does a significant renovation look like? Actively studying what does new look like, both in terms of design, sort of the what, but also the where? Is it on the same site? Is it somewhere else in central Denver? Is it somewhere in the suburbs? All of those things are on the table (and) we’re actively studying.”
