Melvin Gordon, Kansas City Chiefs, Agree to Contract
Gordon began the season in a timeshare with second-year running back Javonte Williams. However, after Williams tore his ACL, Gordon appeared to have a clear path to the starting job. Unfortunately, the veteran wasn’t able to make the most of the opportunities, as fumbles and inefficiency ultimately led to his release. In 10 games with Denver, the running back recorded 318 yards and two touchdowns on 90 carries (3.5 YPC) to go along with five fumbles.
Gordon originally entered the NFL as a first-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Selected by the then-San Diego Chargers, Gordon’s career got off to a slow start. Appearing in 14 games while making 12 starts, the Wisconsin product recorded 641 yards on 184 carries but failed to ever find the endzone during his first year in the league.
Fortunately, Gordon was able to overcome his unimpressive debut and transform into one of the better running backs in the league. From 2016 to 2018, Gordon recorded 2,987 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns on 713 attempts (4.4 YPC) while adding an additional 149 receptions, 1,385 yards, and 10 touchdowns through the air.
Melvin Gordon held out for a new contract for portion of his final year with the Chargers, opening the door for Austin Ekeler to take over as the lead back. During that abbreviated season, Gordon recorded 612 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 162 carries.
Following that season, Gordon signed a new contract with the Denver Broncos. During his first year as the unquestioned starter, Gordon recorded 986 yards and nine touchdowns on 215 carries. The Broncos added Javonte Williams into the mix in 2021, but Gordon still led the way with 918 yards and eight touchdowns on 203 carries.
To date, Gordon has recorded 6,462 rushing yards and 55 touchdowns on 1,567 carries through the course of his professional career.
