Should the Broncos be in on Talanoa Hafanga? Let’s dig in and see
The Denver Broncos desperately need help at safety this offseason. To my eyes, the lack of quality at safety cost the Broncos at least two games this season directly (no offense to Brandon Jones…he’s a great player and is definitely half of the solution for 2025).
This translates to the Broncos needing to swing big at free safety this offseason if they want to upgrade their defense.
Talanoa Hufanga — Safety
Age: 26 | Experience: Fifth | Height: 6’ | Weight: 200 pounds
Talanoa Hufanga had a rough year in 2024 as for the second year in a row he missed a lot of time due to injury. Over the past two seasons, he’s basically missed a season’s worth of games. His play validates the risk the Broncos would be taking to sign him. He’s an all-pro safety and a playmaker in the defensive backfield. He’s got 7 interceptions, 2 sacks, and 14 defended passes in his first three seasons in the league.
OverTheCap projects his salary to be in the $1.7M range.
Why the Broncos should sign
The need for the Broncos is great. If there’s a decent chance that he can return to form with the Broncos, he’s worth signing. The Broncos have one of the best Strength and Conditioning units in the NFL and Hufanga is a young player with a very high ceiling.
Why the Broncos shouldn’t sign
Durability is a key component of long-term players in the NFL. If the Broncos doctors kick the tires and don’t like what they see, the Broncos need to steer clear.
Final thoughts
I think this player is a great fit for the team. He just needs to get his body right. The defense needs playmakers in the secondary and Hufanga is that guy.
With the youth movement on the team, Hufanga is just the kind of vet we need to add to the mix.
