Playoff contender and America’s team, Dallas Cowboys linked to a rumor with former Tennessee Titans, Ryan Tannehill this offseason. According to a report, the Cowboys have a chance to make a run at the former $118 million Pro Bowl quarterback. This idea could be worth visiting given the latest news around franchise star quarterback, Dak Prescott. The Cowboys were planning on extending their long-time franchiser but there haven’t been any negotiations or talks.
This puts the quarterback position in doubt for next season as Prescott is set to become a free agent next offseason and could sign wherever he desires. However, there’s still a chance that America’s team can get a deal done in time before it’s too late. The question remains within the organization of what’s taking so long to make it happen. Many talking heads are confused by the Cowboys not making arrangements to give him a long-term extension.
It seems like the organization is waiting to see how this season turns with Prescott taking over again as the starter. Jerry Jones isn’t afraid of the idea that this could be Prescott’s last year so that indicates they could move on. If that’s the case, Tannehill would bring an illustrious resume to the team being that he has playoff experience. His best statistical season came in 2020 when he threw for 3,819 yards, 33 touchdowns and 7 interceptions while completing 65.5% of his passes.
Tannehill is age 36 so he isn’t in his prime or anything but joining a team like Dallas could give the organization some mentor help for third-stringer Trey Lance. However, there are rumors that they may trade Lance in this year’s draft after one year of riding the bench in Dallas.

Adding Him Could Create a Quarterback Competition
There’s a real chance that if the Cowboys sign Tannehill then they could release either Lance or Cooper Rush. However, Dallas would probably let Rush go to see what Lance can provide to the offense. Last offseason, the team traded for him so there’s a reason why they brought him in. It makes more sense to create competition between Lance and Tannehill to see who could be their No. 2 quarterback behind Prescott.
This is only if Prescott remains with the Cowboys for the future, however, another source says otherwise. According to an insider, the team will try to re-sign their star quarterback to remain with the team. It’s a waiting game at this point and many fans anticipate that he may find a new team for 2025. However, anything can happen in the league since Jerry Jones could be mysteriously on the next move he makes.
It will shock the league if they don’t reach an extension. Tannehill wouldn’t be the long-term solution if Prescott bolts, so there are other possible teams he might wind up on.
Other Possible Fits
The quarterback market is getting thinner and Super Bowl Champions could get trigger-happy by adding another one. The Chiefs could add Tannehill after signing Carson Wentz to create some cushion for Patrick Mahomes. However, the likelihood is that Tannehill wants a starting job but it’s probably best to start ring chasing. Tannehill’s days in the league are numbered so he can create backup quarterback competition in Kansas City.
Tannehill will likely have to wait until after the draft to find out where he may land. However, there’s a chance he could end up as the Broncos next starting quarterback. Denver has the No. 12 pick in this year’s draft so most top quarterback prospects will be gone. The Broncos adding Tannehill could bring a short-term solution if they want to wait until next offseason.
