The Broncos make their first move in free agency by agreeing to terms with safety Talanoa Hufanga.
According to 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis, the Denver Broncos have agreed to terms with former 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that it’s a three-year contract worth $45 million dollars with $20 million dollars in guaranteed money.

Hufanga is a 25-year-old safety who played previously for the 49ers and was a first-team All-Pro player for them back in 2022. However, he has dealt with injuries the past few years including an ACL injury back in 2023. He came back last season but a wrist injury limited him to just 7 games for the 49ers. Now, he appears fully recovered from both injuries and will be joining the Denver Broncos defense.
Through four seasons with the 49ers, Hufanga played in 49 games for the 49ers, including 37 starts and totaled 219 tackles, 9 tackles for a loss, 2 sacks, 14 pass deflections, 7 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 defensive touchdown.
With Hufanga signed, he will take over the other starting safety position that P.J. Locke held last year. He struggled at times last season, including in the Broncos’ wildcard loss to the Bills and could cut in the coming days to free up some additional cap space.
Hufanga comes with some injury concerns but the Broncos have been one of the healthier teams in the league the past two seasons, so let’s see what Beau Lowry can do for Hufanga. His guarantee numbers are low, so the Broncos have protected themselves if the injuries continue for him.
Overall, I really like this addition because Hufanga is a very talented player when healthy. He was a key part of that 49ers defense and could be the same for the Broncos. He is only 25 years old and if he can stay healthy, the Broncos may have just significantly improved their defense.
