With Zack Baun, Nick Bolton, Jamien Sherwood, Ernest Jones, Bobby Wagner and other top free agent linebackers re-signing with their respective teams, Greenlaw becomes the top free agent linebacker available. Under normal circumstances, Greenlaw would be at the top of this group but an Achilles injury he suffered in the 49ers Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs has derailed his career.
The veteran linebacker missed the vast majority of the 2024 season and only ended up playing a handful of snaps. When he did return, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that Greenlaw was dealing with achilles soreness, which showed he was not yet fully recovered from the injury. Now, the veteran linebacker enters free agency with that injury concern clouding his future.
Silver says the 49ers want Greenlaw back but interest elsewhere could have him leaving the team. The Broncos have a desperate need at linebacker and Greenlaw, if healthy, would be exactly what they need. We’ll see how aggressive they will be with him, but if they miss out on him, the linebacker market gets pretty thin. Raiders linebacker Robert Spillane has been connected to the Broncos and appears to be their fallback option.
We’re only an hour away from the start of the legal tampering period so we’ll soon find out what the Broncos plan to do at the linebacker position.
