The Broncos assistant special teams coach is nearing a deal with the New York Jets to become their new special teams coach.
According to 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis, Denver Broncos special teams assistant coach Chris Banjo is nearing a deal to become the New York Jets special teams coach. The Jets hired Broncos assistant general manager Darren Mougey to be their general manager and now they’re hiring Broncos assistant special teams coordinator Chris Banjo to be their new special teams coordinator.
Per source, Chris Banjo and Jets are working on a deal that will make him their new special teams coordinator. Deal should be done tonight.
Banjo was Broncos special teams assistant the past two years. A big loss. Another opening on Sean Payton’s staff. #9sports— MikeKlis9NEWS (@mikeklis9news) January 29, 2025
He will join newly hired head coach Aaron Glenn’s staff with the Jets and look to improve their special teams unit moving forward. Banjo, a former NFL player who played for the Jaguars, Packers, Saints, and Cardinals from 2013 through 2022 joined the Broncos coaching staff with Sean Payton. He has been the Broncos’ assistant special teams coach for the past two seasons and is now getting looks from other teams around the league.
Now, the Broncos are down a special teams coordinator AND their assistant special teams coach. However, replacements could be on their way soon as former Saints special teams coach/interim head coach Darren Rizzi could be joining Payton’s staff.
Klis tweeted out Tuesday night that the buzz is, if Kellen Moore gets the Saints head coaching job, which appears to be the case, Rizzi may become the Broncos special teams coach. He also states that Rizzi would bring along longtime assistant special teams coach Phil Gailano. Payton and the Broncos allowing Banjo to leave their staff could be a sign that they feel confident about Rizzi joining his staff in Denver. Sounds like this announcement will happen sooner rather than later.
The Broncos also need to fill vacancies at pass game coordinator, tight end coach, and linebacker coach. John Morton was hired to be the Lions offensive coordinator job, Declan Doyle was hired to be the Bears offensive coordinator and the team parted way with Greg Manusky earlier this week.
