Allen is entering the final year of his three-year deal with the Broncos and is due a contract extension from the team. He has been one of the best defensive linemen in football during his time with the Broncos and earned second-team All-Pro honors from the Associated Press this past year. Through two seasons with the Broncos, Allen has played in 33 games and totaled 121 tackles, 23 tackles for a loss, 13.5 sacks, 64 QB hits, and 1 forced fumble.
If Tomasson’s report is true, the $25 million per year mark would put Allen near the top of the defensive line contracts. The only two defensive linemen who are making more than $25 million per year are Chiefs IDL Chris Jones($31.75 million per year) and Raiders IDL Christian Wilkins ($27.5 million per year). So, Allen would be joining elite company if he does sign a deal in the $25 million dollar per year range.
The Broncos have signed multiple players, including Pat Surtain II, Quinn Meinerz, Garett Bolles, and Jonathon Cooper, to contract extensions this past year so they have shown that they are willing to lock up their own players. I would assume there would be mutual interest between both sides about getting something done and keeping Allen a member of the Broncos for the foreseeable future.
While some of you may scoff at that high average per year contract, it shouldn’t be an issue. The Broncos have plenty of cash to get these deals done, the cap is always manageable and the cap increases significantly each and every year. So, while this would be a monster extension, it is one they should get done. Good teams find ways to keep good players and Zach Allen is one of their best players and someone who is key to their success moving forward. He has earned and deserves a new contract and I think they’ll get something done sooner rather than later.
