After the Broncos re-signed Jarrett Stidham yesterday to be Bo Nix’s backup, all signs pointed to Wilson signing elsewhere during free agency. With the Dolphins, he gives them a high-upside backup for Tua who has struggled with scary concussion injuries the past few seasons. So, they now have some insurance in case he gets sidelined again for an extended period of time.
The Broncos traded for Wilson last year before the draft mostly as insurance. They have yet to draft Bo Nix and were entering the summer with a lot of questions at quarterback. Thankfully for the Broncos, Bo Nix turned out pretty damn good and Wilson was never really needed. He had a good training camp followed by an impressive preseason but was the Broncos’ third-string quarterback for the entirety of the year.
This does leave an opening at third string quarterback for the Broncos. It remains to be seen if they’ll sign a player to compete for the backup role or go with a late round pick or UDFA that Payton would like to work with. Regardless of what they do, it is nice that the only quarterback questions we have during the offseason are “who will be our third string quarterback?” instead of “oh my god, are we ever going to find our franchise quarterback?”.
I hope the best for Wilson in Miami and if he gets a shot to play that he continues to prove doubters wrong and can eventually earn himself a starting job in this league.
