Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton revealed during an interview with Kay Adams last week that he bought dinner for Kansas City Chiefs wide receivers last week ahead of the Super Bowl.
“Last night, we had dinner,” Payton told Adams last Wednesday. “Man, when you see — the Chiefs receivers were at dinner at Desi Vega’s Steakhouse. And I was jealous for them and I went over, we chatted, we laughed, what have you. And I thought, ‘Man, how exciting it is to be at a position dinner.’ … I thought, ‘I need to buy them this dinner.’ So I said, ‘Andy [Reid] should have given you his credit card.’
“When our players went out to eat in Miami [at the Super Bowl], and I remember giving [Drew] Brees the credit card, and I said, ‘Don’t do too much damage.’ He stopped at $10,000. And so, I had to peek over — it was just the receivers and I know Desi Vega really well — and so, yeah I bought the receivers dinner.”
Payton said it was eight receivers and the bill (with his tab included) was about $1,900.
“Kill ’em with kindness,” Payton said with a laugh.
Kansas City’s list of receivers scheduled to become free agents in March includes DeAndre Hopkins, Marquise Brown, Justin Watson, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman. Younger receivers on the team still a few years away from free agency include Rashee Rice, Skyy Moore and Xavier Worthy.
