Veteran safety Tre’von Moehrig would fit perfectly as a free safety for the Denver Broncos. Is he the right guy to solidify the defensive backfield for the Broncos?
The Broncos need safety help in a bad way. The Raiders are losing a talented free safety to free agency coming off arguably the best season of his career. Let’s dig in and see how well he fits the bill of what the Broncos need.
Tre’von Moehrig — Safety
Age: 25 | Experience: Fifth | Height: 6’2” | Weight: 202 pounds
One of the better hits of the Las Vegas Raiders has been Tre’von Moehrig. He was drafted in the second round at pick 43 in the 2021 NFL draft. He started out of the gate for the Raiders and honed his craft over the past four years.
He’s developed into a sharp safety who can make an impact at all levels of the field of play. He honestly looks just as good playing at strong safety as he does at his natural free safety position.
He’s an athletic safety who, unlike our current free safety, has superb read/react time on the field of play.
OverTheCap projects his salary to be just shy of $6mil / year.
Why the Broncos should sign Tre’von Moehrig
Moehrig instantly upgrades the talent level of the Broncos’ defensive backfield in a big way without breaking the bank. He’s not a top-10 safety but looks like he’s on the trajectory to be that with more development. While the Broncos had an arguably great defense last season, safety play cost them multiple games.
Why the Broncos shouldn’t sign Tre’von Moehrig
The Broncos have plenty of holes on their roster to fill and paying a premium for a safety probably isn’t in the grand plans for Sean Payton and George Paton. If Moehrig gets too large of an offer, the Broncos shouldn’t chase. If getting him costs more than $10 mil/year, the Broncos will probably be out on him.
Final thoughts
Tre’von Moehrig would look superb in orange and blue. I’m a sucker for a good safety. I’m definitely in on Moehrig. We’ll see soon enough if the Broncos are too.
