The Denver Broncos have a new starting safety after reportedly agreeing to a three-year deal worth up to $45 million for former San Francisco 49ers fifth-round pick Talanoa Hufanga. According to Adam Schefter, his contract is worth up to $45 million but due to valid injury concerns it is only $20 million in guaranteed money.

This is a rather favorable deal for the Broncos on the guaranteed money side of things, especially for a player who has appeared in just 17 total games over the past two seasons. However, if he stays healthy the “up to” amount then begins to favor Hufanga. As a fan, I’m happy both ways on the contract side of things. If he stays healthy, I’m more than happy paying a former first-team All-Pro player $15 million a year.
Either way, he’ll figure to be a massive upgrade over P.J. Locke. At 25 years old, Hufanga is entering his prime years too. I love this signing if Hufanga can stay healthy all season long.
Given the injury concerns, however, I’d be okay seeing the Broncos avoid immediately cutting and moving on from Locke. He’d provide a good backup plan with tons of game experience and despite his struggles at times he is likely better than anything else Denver can go to in 2025.
