Deion Sanders shut down an “idiotic” rumor that spread on Monday.
In a column critical of the culture Sanders created at Colorado, Denver Sports’ Jake Shapiro accused the head coach of telling the school band not to play the fight song after Sheduer Sanders scores a touchdown. Shapiro claimed that Coach Prime only wanted Folsom Field to play the quarterback’s song, “Perfect Timing.”
Colorado already denied the bizarre claim, exclaiming that the stadium plays a few seconds of “Perfect Timing” before the school band performs “Glory, Glory, Colorado.'” A spokesperson said nobody has ever told the band not to play the Colorado fight song.
When speaking to reporters Tuesday, Deion Sanders condemned the media for running with the “idiotic” story.
“We gotta start having some kind of accountability for this,” Sanders said, per The Athletic’s David Ubben.
Following some past contentious moments with media members, including banning a reporter from asking questions because of negative coverage, Sanders had another message to those taking baseless shots at him.
“I have a huge platform. I could really get personal if I wanted to,” he said, via ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. “But I choose not to do that because it’s not right.”
The former two-way sports team also appeared to address the story Monday on social media.
“What happened to Accountability for lies told & consequently sold,” Sanders wrote. “A lie don’t care who tells it & only a fool can fool a fool but the Wise is Prudent.”
The Buffaloes will look to bounce back from a Week 2 loss to Nebraska when facing Colorado State this Saturday night. CBS will begin airing the rivalry matchup at 7:30 p.m. ET.
