At 5-2 on the season, Deion Sanders is already one win away from delivering the Colorado Buffaloes to their first bowl-eligible season since 2016 with nearly half a season still to play. The key to that success has been three straight road wins, during which Coach Prime has learned to embrace the hate his school receives.
Speaking to the media this week, Sanders admitted that he and his players like to be “booed, naysayed and hated.” He said that it “turns the team on” to hear people boo them and that they’ve learned to embrace being underdogs when they’re on the road.
“We like to be booed, naysayed and hated. That turns us on. It turns us on. It’s kind of sexy, matter of fact,” Sanders said. “That’s how I felt when I played. I loved to be on the road and get booed and naysayed and all of that. I think we like being the underdogs. We like being those types of people.
“Not that — we don’t look at the betting line or whatever, underdogs meaning on the road, away from home. We like that, we like that, we really do.”
Colorado seemed dead and buried after their 1-1 start which saw them lose to Nebraska on the road by a big margin, rarely looking competitive in that game. But Coach Prime’s plays rallied and won three straight games, including an overtime thriller to Big 12 rival Baylor.
Even after losing at home to a ranked Kansas State team the Buffaloes continued to impress, and Saturday’s blowout win over Arizona puts them in great position to make a push for a winning season.
Their next few games could get rough as their next three opponents all have winning records. But if they can weather the storm, they have a good chance to finish the year strong against a pair of Big 12 cellar dwellers in Kansas and Oklahoma.
