Colorado State players went after Colorado ahead of Saturday’s matchup. Deion Sanders shied away from answering the trash talk.
Wide receiver Tyler Horton said Colorado State “should have murdered” Colorado in last year’s double-overtime loss and claimed the Rams are “coming for revenge” this weekend. Quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi claimed Colorado entered last year’s matchup “with an attitude” as considerable favorites.
“You have to line up 11 guys against our 11 guys, and we’ll find out who wants it more,” Fowler-Nicolosi said. “We’ll see how far Instagram followers gets them.”
Sanders was asked about the comments on his Colorado Football Coaches Show streamed Thursday afternoon.
“You know somebody is going to say something stupid, and then it’s going to add even more juice to it,” Sanders said. “And it has happened. It has happened, and it wasn’t us.”
The Buffaloes head coach acknowledged that a barb “makes it personal again,” but he wouldn’t publicly direct any insults back to the Colorado State players.
“You analyze it as an adult. Kids don’t. They just get mad,” Sanders explained. “You analyze it as an adult, and you say, ‘OK, I see why you said that.’ And you know what’s behind it. But you try to understand that those are kids.
“Don’t do it … So I’m not going to do it. I’m not going to take that bait. That’s too easy.”
However, that doesn’t mean Sanders is ignoring the comments. He replied “of course” when asked if he played the clip for his team.
Sanders also explained that he doesn’t want his players verbally going after the other team before games.
“We don’t get down like that. We don’t talk about the opposing team,” Sanders said. “We just go out there and try our best to do what we’re gifted to do. We don’t win wars in the media. We never have.”
