Colorado head coach Deion Sanders shows his star cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter as much love as his own sons and is one of Hunter’s biggest cheerleaders. There was only one thing that had him “upset” about today’s incredible game against the UCF Knights.
After beating UCF 48-21 on the road – a game that saw Hunter finish with 89 receiving yards and a touchdown on offense plus an interception on defense – Sanders admitted in his on-field interview that he was “really upset” because he was told that Hunter only needed a few extra yards to continue his streak of games with over 100 receiving yards and couldn’t get it for him. But Sanders said that Hunter is fine with that outcome as long as he’s playing at the highest level and being “one of the best players in college football” – and he agrees with the assessment.
“We were really upset because they just told me he needed like 10 more yards to consistently have his 100-yard streak,” Sanders said. “We were gonna try to get it to him but we didn’t want to be outlandish or do anything crazy to provoke ignorance.
“But Travis is OK with it. He’s not playing for that. He’s just playing for — he wants to be one of the best players in college football. And I think he is.”
Sanders reiterated during his postgame press conference that he really regrets not being able to get Hunter over the 100-yard mark.
“I wish to God that the game was in a way that we could’ve kept going with his 100-yard mark, even though he don’t care, we care,” Sanders said.

Sanders has made it clear that he feels the deck is stacked pretty heavily against Hunter’s Heisman Trophy hopes. He likely feels that Hunter needs to overperform in order to get even a little bit of consideration for the award.
Judging by the response from fans though, Hunter has plenty of support already.
