29 years ago almost to this very day Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made then-free agent cornerback Deion Sanders the highest paid defensive player in the NFL on the way to winning a third Super Bowl in four years.
By all accounts, Jones and Sanders remain on good terms all of these years later. That’s something that even some of the greatest players and coaches in team history can’t quite claim with Jones.
Now that Sanders is the head coach at Colorado and making waves – for better or worse – people have been wondering for over a year if he could someday be the Dallas Cowboys’ head coach.
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith asked Jones this very question in his interview of the Cowboys owner this week.
Jones’ answer was a pretty clear “no.”
“No, but he does know how to spell well enough and not answer a hypothetical question,” Jones said. “First of all, you are familiar with our… ‘love affair’ that we have. I have always admired him, both on and off the field. Some of the best stories that I have to tell about my time in sports have been Deion-type stories with Deion and Michael (Irvin) and those guys.”
Jones recalled fondly how much fun it was to work with Sanders on recruiting him to Dallas and introducing him as a Cowboy before the 1995 season.
Other than that, he didn’t have much to say on what Sanders has done as a coach.
So it doesn’t sound like Jones is in any hurry to bring Sanders into the fold no matter how much they respect each other.
