Joel Klatt defended his alma mater amid another strange Colorado football story.
Jake Shapiro of Denver Sports caused a media firestorm when claiming that head coach Deion Sanders directed the school band not to play its fight song after Shedeur Sanders scored a touchdown. Instead, he allegedly wanted Folsom Field to play his son’s rap song, “Perfect Timing,” from the speakers.
Colorado already released a statement denying the story, and Coach Prime also seemed to challenge those claims. Yet one of the football program’s most famous former players also refuted the allegation.
Klatt, an ex-Buffaloes quarterback now working as a college football color commentator for FOX, delivered a concise response to Monday’s gossip.
“This is false,” Klatt wrote on social media. “That is all.”
A Colorado spokesperson explained that the band plays “Glory, Glory, Colorado” after every home touchdown and “Fight CU” after a successful point-after try. After Sanders scores, they “will wait a moment for a small snippet of Shedeur’s song to play before immediately kicking into ‘Glory, Glory, Colorado.'”
“Nobody ever asked the band to refrain from playing the fight song,” Colorado’s spokesperson said.
Deion Sanders also appeared to address the reports in a cryptic tweet sent Monday night.
“What happened to Accountability for lies told & consequently sold,” Sanders wrote. “A lie don’t care who tells it & only a fool can fool a fool but the Wise is Prudent.”
Colorado’s school band had four chances to commemorate touchdowns during Week 1’s 31-28 win over North Dakota State. The Buffaloes will try to bounce back from a road loss to Nebraska when going to Colorado State before hosting Baylor.
