In less than a month, the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner will be crowned in New York City.
A number of players have made great Heisman cases this season, including Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty and quarterbacks Cam Ward of Miami (Fla.) and Dillon Gabriel of Oregon, among others. As of now though, the clear betting favorite for the trophy is Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter.
Hunter, who is one of the top cornerbacks in the country on defense and a playmaking wide receiver on offense, is now -350 to win the Heisman. Jeanty has the next best odds at +350.
Following Saturday’s 49-24 win over Utah in which Hunter caught five passes for 55 yards, scored a five-yard rushing touchdown, posted three tackles and intercepted one pass, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders vouched for his teammate and close friend on social media.
“@TravisHunterJr proved he should win the Heisman,” Sanders tweeted.
If Hunter wins the Heisman, he would be the first Colorado player to take home college football’s most coveted award since the late Rashaan Salaam 30 years ago.
On the season, Hunter has 74 receptions for 911 yards and nine touchdowns along with 23 tackles, three interceptions and eight pass breakups.
The West Palm Beach, Fla. native struck the Heisman pose after scoring a TD on Saturday and has been quite adamant that he should win the trophy for some time now.
“I know I can win it, but I don’t know who’s there,” Hunter said last month. “I mean y’all see Ashton Jeanty, it’s not like we haven’t seen a running back that’s good. We haven’t seen a player that plays both ways and I’m gonna keep saying that.”
“He has, I think, 95 carries for 1,000 yards. If I had 95 catches, how much yards you think I’d have? If I had 95 targets on defense what you think I’d have? If I had 95 catches on offense, what do you think I’d have?” Hunter added.
The 2024 Heisman Trophy ceremony is set for 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, Dec. 14. ESPN will broadcast the festivities.
