Errick McCollum: “There was another time I had an opportunity after China. I was talking with the Clippers, and CP3 called my brother and was like, ‘Yo, we need your brother, blah, blah, he’s a G.’ I was going to be the backup point guard. China’s season is short, it finishes in February, and it was perfect timing. I played from September to February, just came off a great year, and I was ready to go. Everything was lined up; they started getting the contracts together, everything was perfect. This was when they were Lob City — DeAndre Jordan, Blake Griffin, J.J. Redick, CP. They wanted to preserve CP’s body, keep him from playing 36 or 37 minutes a night, maybe get him down to 32 or 33 minutes. I would have come in playing 15 or 16 minutes a game. I was cool with that, I could do that.” “Everything was about to go through, and then bam, Doc Rivers traded for his son. And man, there was no spot for the backup point guard anymore. Austin Rivers took the backup role, and it was over. Those were the two opportunities I had early in my career to go to the NBA. That’s crazy, man. You never know, the Clippers thing could have gone through, and I’d probably still be playing right now. For real, like, for real. That was the plan — I was ready to go. The timing was perfect, but then the opportunity vanished just like that.”
