Elias Diaz set the bar high as MVP last year. How will RyMac do?
The 94th edition of the MLB All-Star Game will take place on Tuesday night at 6 MDT in Arlington, Texas, and Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon is making his Midsummer Classic debut off the bench.
McMahon, 29, is in his eighth season (seventh full season) in the Major Leagues and having a breakout season offensively to pair with his strong defensive skills at third base. He has hit 14 homers and 21 doubles and driven in 45 runs while hitting .272/.350/.447/.797. Getting selected for the game is a huge honor for the Rockies second-round draft pick in 2013, who then was asked to fill the shoes of Nolan Arenado’s vacancy when the then five-time All-Star (now eight) was traded to the Cardinals in 2021.
McMahon became a father in February when he and his wife, Natalie, welcomed their daughter into their family. All the McMahons are taking part in the All-Star festivities, including walking the red carpet.

If the game is close in the final innings, being a late-game reserve can give players a chance to shine as we witnessed with Elias Díaz last season when he hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to help the National League defeat the American League 3-2 and become the first Rockie to be named the All-Star Game MVP.
This year, like all others, both teams are stacked. Pittsburgh rookie phenom Paul Skenes will start for the National League after posing a 6-0 record an 1.90 ERA in his first 11 starts.
Corbin Burnes, a three-time All-Star for the Brewers, will start for the American League. Burnes, the 2021 NL Cy Young winner, has a 9-4 record with a 2.43 ERA in 19 starts for the Orioles.
