He’s the first Rockie to win this award since CJ Cron in August 2021
We all knew Brenton Doyle was on fire in July, and today MLB agreed, recognizing him as the NL Player of the Month.
His accomplishments are significant.
Over 24 games in July, the Colorado Rockies center fielder slashed .333/.394/.800 — including seven doubles, one triple, 11 home runs and 27 RBI. His 19 extra-base hits led MLB while his 11 home runs tied with Oakland’s Brent Rooker. In addition, Doyle’s 72 total bases led the National League.
He also ranked second in slugging and OPS (1.194).
Don’t forget his torrid start to July that resulted in NL Player of the Week honors back on July 8. That’s when he slashed .524/.600/1.268 with eight extra-base hits and nine RBI over six games from July 1-7. He was the first Rockies player to win Player of the Week since Nolan Jones the last week of the 2023 season.
From July 1-3, Doyle became the third player in the Modern Era (since 1901) to have three doubles, three home runs and one stolen base in the first three games of any month (July), joining Jeff Kent (June 2000) and Larry Walker (Aug. 1997).
But he wasn’t done yet.
In eight games from July 1-9, Doyle went 15-for-27 (.555) with five doubles, six home runs, 11 RBI, six walks and one stolen base, joining Larry Walker, Reggie Jackson, Willie Mays, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth as the only players to post those numbers across an eight-game span.
Adding to all that, earlier this week, Doyle was named the Rockies 2024 Heart and Hustle Award winner. This award from the MLBPAA recognizes active players who demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball and best embody the value, spirit and traditions of the game.
And let’s take a moment — again — to appreciate his catch from last night’s game:
For Brenton Doyle, it’s definitely been a July to remember.
