The Rockies welcome the Red Sox to town for the first time since 2019
The Colorado Rockies kick off a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox this evening, hosting them for just the fifth time in franchise history (during the regular season). The last time the Sox were in town was 2019, where the Rox lost both games of the two-game set. They have gone 5-5 overall at Coors Field against the Sox during the regular season. They took two of three at Fenway Park in 2023, though, winning each of the first two games in extra innings.
The Red Sox bring with them old friend Trevor Story, who is making his first return to Coors Field since he left after the 2021 season. Story is on the 60-day IL, though, after suffering a shoulder injury on April 5 and won’t play this series.
Austin Gomber (2-6, 4.61 ERA) will take the mound for the Rox. In his last outing on July 11th against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark, Gomber logged his 100th-career start. The Rockies ultimately lost 8-1, but Gomber allowed four runs on seven hits across five innings, walking one and striking out five. All four runs came on two homers. The left-hander is making his second-career start against the Red Sox, with the first one coming on June 24 last year at Fenway. In that start, he tossed six innings while allowing three runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
Gomber will face Sox veteran right-hander Tanner Houck (8-6, 2.54 ERA), who is also fresh off his first All-Star selection. Houck pitched the third inning for the American League, allowing three runs on four hits with a strikeout. In his last regular-season outing, Houck faced the Oakland Athletics on July 11. He threw six shutout innings while allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out six. Houck is facing the Rockies for the first time in his career this evening.
