The Rockies look to stop the bleeding in the second game of a double header against the Giants.
After striking out 17 times in game one of tonight’s double header against the San Francisco Giants, the Colorado Rockies have now lost ten straight games by the bay at Oracle Park. The Rockies won’t have much time to lick their wounds before game two this evening, but there is still room to salvage the double header.
Right-handed rookie Tanner Gordon will start the game for the Rockies, freshly called up to serve as the 27th man in the double header. Gordon has shown promise in his first two big league starts, but has also been hammered by opposing teams. He’s given up six home runs in 9 1⁄3 innings, including four to the New York Mets before the All-Star break. He’s also struck out seven batters to two walks.
The Giants will counter with a rookie of their own in the right-handed Hayden Birdsong. Birdsong has a 3.55 ERA with 30 strikeouts over his first five starts and 25 1⁄3 innings of work this season. He faced the Rockies earlier this year and spun a six inning quality start, giving up two earned runs on two hits and striking out a career high 12 batters.
