The Rockies will look to avoid the sweep in the Bay Area this afternoon
The Colorado Rockies continue their 11-day, 10-game road trip through California as they look to avoid their eighth sweep of the year. They are playing the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park, where they have lost 11-straight games. That is tied for their third-longest losing streak at any opposing ballpark in franchise history (also Minute Maid Park in Houston from Aug. 15, 2018-present). The franchise record is 12 consecutive losses at both Dodger Stadium (July 1, 2018-Sept. 20, 2019) and Busch Stadium III (Aug. 1, 2018-Aug. 18, 2022).
In addition, the stove is heating up a smidge ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline. Yesterday, the Rox finalized a trade of Nick Mears to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for RHP’s Bradley Blalock and Yujanyer Herrera. You can read more about the details here.
Austin Gomber (2-6, 4.70 ERA) will make the start for the Rockies this afternoon, potentially his last in Rockies purple. Gomber has been floated throughout trade discussions, so we’ll see if gets moved. But in the meantime, Gomber is making his seventh career start (ninth appearance) against the Giants. All but one of those outings have come at Oracle Park. In his last outing against the Boston Red Sox on Monday, Gomber allowed four runs on six hits (three of the runs came on a Jamie Westbrook three-run homer) through 5 2⁄3 innings. Gomber last faced the Giants on July 7, 2023 in San Francisco. He allowed two runs on five hits through six innings. Both runs came from a two-run homer from Brandon Crawford in the sixth inning.
Gomber will face Giants’ lefty Erik Miller (3-3, 3.47 ERA), who will be acting as an opener in today’s game. The Giants are 5-4 in games that Miller has opened this season, and he has posted a 0.93 ERA and nine strikeouts as an opener.
Can the Rockies avoid the sweep and win their first game at Oracle Park in 2024 this afternoon?
