Can the Rockies win the series today?
The Colorado Rockies will look to cap off this homestand with a win against the Atlanta Braves before heading to Phoenix for a quick three-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks. They won the first game 6-5, and then lost a very Coorsy contest last night 11-8. If they win today, it will be their first series win over the Braves since taking both games of a two-game set in Atlanta from September 14-15, 2021. The last time they won a series against the Braves at Coors Field was a four-game sweep in 2016.
Kyle Freeland (3-4, 5.65 ERA) will take the mound for the Rox. In his last outing against the New York Mets on August 6, Freeland tossed 4 2⁄3 innings while allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. He has made eight career appearances, all starts, against the Braves and owns a 1-4 record and 6.26 ERA. Unfortunately, though, he has lost each of his last three decisions over his last four starts against them. In his last start against the Braves on August 30, 2023 at Coors Field, Freeland allowed seven runs (six earned) through 5 2⁄3 innings.
Freeland will face Braves’ rookie right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach (4-5, 4.04 ERA). Schwellenbach is making his 12th-career start this afternoon and is facing the Rockies for the first time. In his last outing against the Miami Marlins on August 2, he threw seven innings of three-run ball (two home runs) on six hits while striking out 10. In his previous start, Schwellenbach struck out 11 Mets.
