Can the Rockies avoid the sweep behind their rookie starter?
The Colorado Rockies (44-77) saw yet another lead waste away as the offense disappeared after the third inning, resulting in a walk-off loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks (68-53) who remain well-positioned in the Wild Card race.
Now 2-7 on the year against Arizona, the Rockies will look to rookie starter Tanner Gordon who has been making strides in his past few starts. Despite being 0-3 with a 6.15 ERA in 26 1⁄3 innings of work, Gordon has steadily shown improvement as a starter including his last start in Colorado where he allowed two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts over five innings against the Atlanta Braves. In his two starts since being called up on August 3, Gordon has allowed three runs on seven hits in 11 innings of work with a notable 11 strikeouts to just one walk.
He faces off against 2023 World Series Champion Jordon Montgomery who has not exactly had the best year with the Diamondbacks. After signing late with the team in the Scott Boras free-agent fiasco this year, Montgomery has gone 7-6 with a 6.37 ERA over 83 1⁄3 innings in 17 starts. The main culprit has been his command as he’s allowed 32 walks against just 55 strikeouts and opponents are hitting a career-high .316 against him. His last start came at home against the Phillies where he allowed four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 5 2⁄3 innings of work. It was the first time he had worked more than five innings since June 21.
