Romo got the call up and the nicknames are out for Players Weekend
Players Weekend is taking over Coors Field tonight through Sunday as the Rockies host the San Diego Padres.
There are some changes to the weekend and even though nicknames are on social media lineup graphics, they won’t be on jerseys this year. Here’s what the Rockies and Padres have for Friday night’s showdown:

Friday night will be dedicated to fun where “aspects of players’ personalities, friendships and off-field interests will be featured,” according to CBS Sports. Saturday will feature players’ causes and community work, while Sunday is appreciation day where “Players will celebrate the people who helped them on their path to the Major Leagues.”
Friday’s game will feature customized bats and cleats where players can celebrate their cultures and interests. Here’s a sampling of bats for Michael Toglia, Sam Hilliard and Jake Cave:

In other big news, the Rockies called up “catcher of the future” prospect Drew Romo after releasing Elias Díaz. Jacob Stallings is slated to start, but Romo should start at least one game over the weekend.
On the mound, Colorado’s Cal Quantrill (7-8, 4.56 ERA) will go against San Diego’s Matt Waldron (7-9, 4.00 ERA).
The last time Cal Quantrill faced the Padres, on Aug. 4, it didn’t go very well. After giving up five hits, including two homers, for three runs in 4 1⁄3 innings, Quantrill left the game and the Rockies went on to lose 10-2.
Right forearm soreness forced Quantrill to miss his last scheduled start, but he’ll be back on the mound Friday night in the series opener against the Padres. Waldron, who gave up one run on two hits, including a Brenton Doyle homer, with seven strikeouts and two walks in getting a win on Aug. 4, will go head-to-head with Quantril again tonight.
Waldron struggled in his one start between his last match-up against the Rockies when he gave up five runs on five hits, including a homer, in 4 1⁄3 innings against Miami. Despite the Padres going down 7-3 in after the fifth inning, the Padres rallied back for the win.
The Padres come to town having won 10 of their last 11 games and their 69-53 record is tied with Arizona’s to put both NL West teams in the top two spots for the Wild Card. The Rockies are 3-8 in their last 11 games and are coming off being swept by the Diamondbacks in a three-game series.
Friday’s game will be followed by a Todd Helton-themed drone show.
