Colorado will take on former Rockie DJ LaMahieu at Yankee Stadium
For the first time since 2019, the Rockies will play at Yankee Stadium when New York hosts Colorado for a three-game series starting Friday night.
Kyle Freeland (3-5, 5.97 ERA) will start game one for the Rockies, making his second-ever start at Yankee Stadium. The last one came in 2019 and didn’t go so well. He gave up five earned runs on six hits including a homer in four innings. A lot has happened since 2019 when Freeland lost his mojo and was sent to Triple-A. He has been building his way back up and through injuries ever since.
Most recently, Freeland spent almost a month on the IL with a left elbow strain. Since returning to the rotation on June 23, Freeland has been closer to the 2018 version. In his 10 starts, the Rockies have gone 7-3, he’s gone 2-3 and posted a 3.97 ERA with 50 strikeouts and 13 walks in 56 2⁄3 innings. Six of those starts have been quality ones, but his three starts in August haven’t been as effective, mostly due to a nagging blister that’s forced him to leave two games early. The lefty has recorded a 7.43 ERA in 13 1⁄3 innings and he hasn’t made it past the fifth inning.
Carlos Rodón (13-8, 4.34 ERA) will be starting for the Yankees. In five career starts against the Rockies, he’s gone 2-2 with a 4.78 ERA, including giving up four runs in five innings in a 7-2 loss in Colorado last year. Rodón isn’t the same as he was as an All-Star with the White Sox in 2021 or with the Giants in 2022, but he’s still had a solid season thus far. In 25 starts, he has 148 strikeouts, while giving up 24 homers and 44 walks.
The Rockies will see a familiar face at first base in DJ Lamahieu. Before Friday’s game the Rockies made some roster moves.
The Rockies announced the following moves today:
– Selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Luis Peralta (#41) from Triple-A Albuquerque.
– Optioned right-handed pitcher Tanner Gordon to Triple-A.
– Transferred right-handed pitcher Germán Márquez to the 60-day injured list.…— Rockies Club Information (@RockiesClubInfo) August 23, 2024
The Yankees, who are 75-53 and in first place in the AL East, hold the all-time series lead over the Rockies at 13-12, but the Rockies are 3-8 all-time in New York. The Rockies, who are 47-81 and in last place in the NL West, did win two out of three games last year at Coors Field.
