The Rockies look to play spoiler against the Orioles by swiping a series win to open up September.
The final month of the 2024 regular season starts today and with the Colorado Rockies already locked into a losing season with a difficult strength of schedule remaining, it’s time to play a little spoiler. Last night they seized an exciting win and today they aim to finish the job by stealing a series win from the playoff hopeful Baltimore Orioles.
Making the start for the Rockies this afternoon is the left-handed Ty Black, who is freshly recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque. Cal Quantrill was originally scheduled to start but was scratched due to inflammation of the right triceps.
Blach has been successful with the Isotopes over 10 appearances and seven starts with a 2.48 ERA over 32 2⁄3 innings. However, on the big league roster he’s struggled a bit more. In 18 appearances—ten of which were starts—Blach has posted an ERA of 6.36 and given up 13 home runs over 63 2⁄3 innings of work.
On the bump for the birds is right-handed veteran Zach Eflin, who was acquired by the Orioles at this year’s trade deadline. Eflin has a 3.72 ERA over 23 starts this season, most of which were with the Tampa Bay Rays. Since coming to Baltimore he has made four starts with a 2.13 ERA while walking just two batters compared to 25 strikeouts. Eflin has six career starts against the Rockies with a 5.57 ERA over 32 1⁄3 innings.
Roster Moves: Right-handed pitcher Cal Quantrill has been moved to the 15-day injured list (right triceps inflammation). C/DH/1B/OF Hunter Goodman and LHP Evan Justice have been recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque for September roster expansion. To make room on the 40-man roster for Ty Blach, RHP Noah Davis has been outrighted to Triple-A.
The Rockies announced the following moves today:
– Selected the contract of LHP Ty Blach from Triple-A Albuquerque.
– Recalled UTL Hunter Goodman from Triple-A.
– Recalled LHP Evan Justice (#56) from Triple-A.
– Placed RHP Cal Quantrill on the 15-day injured list with right…— Rockies Club Information (@RockiesClubInfo) September 1, 2024
