Can the Rockies bounce back after last night’s clobbering?
After a 17-2 drubbing at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday, the Colorado Rockies bounced back and beat the Brew Crew 7-2 during Thursday’s day game.
Unfortunately, that momentum did not carry over into San Diego, where the Rockies got roughed up once again 8-0 by the Padres — their first shutout of the season.
It’s still early, but they are staring a 3-10 start in the face, which is tied for the worst start in franchise history with the 2024, 2021, 2019 and 2005 clubs. But of those four, only the 2019 and 2021 clubs moved on to 3-11. The Padres are a franchise-best 8-0 at home to start the season… hot on the heels of their City Connect jersey reveal, can the Rockies snap that streak and avoid a third 3-11 start?
Chase Dollander (1-0, 7.20 ERA) is making his second start of the season and his first on the road. Against the Athletics, Dollander allowed four runs on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts over five innings. He earned the win, becoming the first Rockies starting pitcher to do so since Peter Lambert did against the Chicago Cubs on June 6, 2019. He is also the only Rockies starter with a winning decision so far this season.
Dollander will face Padres’ lefty Kyle Hart (1-0, 11.12 ERA). The 32-year-old is making his sixth-career start and the first of his career against the Rockies and the NL West. Hart signed a one-year deal with the Friars in the offseason and made his Padres debut (and first MLB start since 2020) on March 31 against the Cleveland Guardians. He struck out four Guardians and walked one through five innings while allowing two hits and two earned runs (both solo shots from José Ramirez and Austin Hedges). The win cemented the Padres’ first 5-0 start in franchise history, and also Hart’s first MLB win.
