Gordon is back while the offense tries to rebound
The first game in Detroit was one the Colorado Rockies would rather soon forget. For the first time in club history, the team sent the 27-batter minimum to the plate in a nine-inning game and were shut out for the 15th time this season. The team mustered just three hits and will now look to change their fortunes in Game Two.
Tanner Gordon (0-5, 7.55 ERA) will make the start having just been recalled while Austin Gomber was placed on paternity leave. Gordon has had a mixed bag of results in his seven big league starts, working at least five innings in four starts while limiting walks and generally throwing strikes. However, the placement of pitches and too many bad strikes have resulted into a lot of hits and trouble for the young right-hander. He makes his eighth big league start on the heels of eight shutout innings for the Albuquerque Isotopes.
The Tigers counter with a former top pitching prospect in Casey Mize (2-6, 4.30 ERA). Injuries have limited the 2018 number-one overall pick to just 100 innings since 2022. Mize was recently activated from the 60-day injured list on August 30. He has done decently enough in his two starts since returning, allowing six earned runs in 11 1⁄3 innings with two walks and six strikeouts.
And now to the details.
