Rockies take on Cubs in 1st of 6-game homestand
The first of two final homestands of the 2024 season will begin tonight for the Rockies as they host the Chicago Cubs Friday through Sunday.
Arizona will then come to Coors Field before Colorado makes a trip to Los Angeles to play the Dodgers, only to return to Denver to host the Cardinals and Dodgers. There are 15 games left and the Rockies are eight losses away from the 100-loss mark.
Up first, Austin Gomber (5-10, 4.50 ERA) will be on the mound for the Rockies, who will be looking for their first win of the season against the Cubs after being swept at Wrigley Field in early April (when they were outscored 26-10 in three games).
Gomber missed his last start on paternity leave as he and his wife Rachel welcomed a daughter, Adalyn Rae, earlier this week. She’s the couple’s third child.
Gomber pitched incredibly well in his last start when he held the Braves to one run on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts in eight innings. Gomber has already pitched more innings (150) this season than in any of his previous five in MLB. His 4.50 ERA is his lowest as a Rockie, slightly edging out his 4.53 mark from 2021.
The Cubs (75—71) enter the series five games out of the NL Wild Card. After an 18-8 August, Chicago has cooled off in September, going 5-5 in their last 10 games. Javier Assad (7-5, 3.14 ERA) will be on the mound against the Rockies on Friday night. Assad, the 27-year-old righty who is in his third season in the Majors, is 2-1 in three starts (four appearances) against the Rockies in his career with a 4.70 ERA. Earlier this season, he held the Rockies scoreless in six innings of work, only giving up four hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
