Can the Rockies win the series against the Cubs?
After taking last night’s game 9-5, the Colorado Rockies will look to win the series against the Chicago Cubs tonight in the quest to avoid a second-straight 100-loss season. They have 14 games remaining, and need to go 7-7 to avoid the century mark.
Kyle Freeland (5-7, 4.97 ERA) will take the mound for the Rockies. In his last outing against the Milwaukee Brewers, Freeland threw six innings and allowed just one unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts and zero walks. Freeland pitched against the Cubs in April at Wrigley Field, but unfortunately the results weren’t as nice. He allowed seven runs on nine hits with two home runs, one hit batter, three walks and two strikeouts. He was placed on the IL on April 19, and has been a completely different pitcher since returning on June 23. Freeland has gone 5-4 with a 3.36 ERA in in 14 starts since then. Can he continue to finish the season strong?
Freeland will duel against Cubs’ veteran right-hander Jameson Taillon (10-8, 3.57 ERA). This is Taillon’s second year with the Cubs after signing as a free agent following the 2022 season. Previously, he spent two years with the New York Yankees and four with the Pittsburgh Pirates after debuting in 2016. In his last outing against his most-recent former club, Taillon held the Yankees to one run on six hits over six innings with six strikeouts and one walk.
