Will the offense show up for Freeland or will the King reign supreme?
It’s been an abysmal start to the road trip for the Colorado Rockies (3-11) as they have now lost the first two games of the series against the San Diego Padres (12-3). So far they have been shut out in back-to-back games, the first time that has happened since April 2021. As they finish out the three-game set, can the Rockies find some offense in the San Diego sun?
Kyle Freeland (0-2, 3.79 ERA) takes the mound for the Rockies in his fourth start of the season. It will be his 25 appearance against the Padres in his career in which he has gone 7-8 with a 4.56 ERA in 122 1⁄3 innings of work. At Petco Park specifically, he has made 10 starts and owns a 3.07 ERA with 41 strikeouts and 21 walks. Freeland’s last start came against the Milwaukee Brewers and while the five runs allowed are unsightly, he did pitch a strong game, going 6 1⁄3 innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Unfortunately, the Rockies haven’t been able to provide any run support for him.
The Padres will counter with one of their aces, Michael King. He is off to a bit of a slower start with a 4.05 ERA, but that slow start is somebody else’s hot streak, that’s just the level of quality King is as a pitcher. In his 13 1⁄3 innings of work, he has 16 strikeouts and allowed seven walks. In his last outing against the Athletics, he went 5 2⁄3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. The Padres have remained perfect at home and in his last start at Petco, tossed five scoreless innings against Cleveland.
Can the Rockies figure out their offense or will they suffer yet another sweep on the road?
