Five games to go and three losses before 100. Can the Rockies take a game from the redbirds?
It’s the penultimate game of the Colorado Rockies’ penultimate series with two eliminated teams playing for nothing but pride. The Rockies are squaring off against Nolan Arenado and the St. Louis Cardinals as they fight to avoid 100 losses for the second straight season. With five games left—including tonight—the Rockies must go 3-2 in order to change their fate.
Making his final start of the season for the Rockies is the left-handed Austin Gomber. Gomber enters tonight with a 4.67 ERA in 29 starts. His last time out against the Arizona Diamondbacks he made it through just two innings while giving up five earned runs on six hits—including three home runs. Gomber looks to end his season on a high note with his future uncertain as he enters his first year of arbitration eligibility.
On the bump for the Cardinals is the right-handed Erick Fedde. In 30 starts this season Fedde is carrying a 3.38 ERA over 170 1⁄3 innings of work and 144 total strikeouts. Fedde hasn’t faced the Rockies this season, but historically they’ve had his number. He has a 6.30 ERA over five appearances and four starts. Fedde’s primary pitch combo consists of a cutter that barely tops 90 MPH and a sinker in the low-to-mid 90s. He combines them with a sweeper, changeup, and a very occasional four seam fastball.
