The Rockies look to avoid being swept in their penultimate series of 2024.
It’s a battle of the Kyles on a sunny Thursday afternoon in Denver as two eliminated clubs square off. The Colorado Rockies are looking to avoid a sweep at the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals in their second-to-last series of the season. If they lose today the Rockies will be just one away from 100 for the second time in franchise history with the Los Angeles Dodgers on their doorstep.
Starting on the mound for the Rockies is the hometown lefty Kyle Freeland, who deserves credit for righting his ship here in 2024. After a brutal start to the season and some time on the injured list, Freeland enters his final start of the year with a sub-5.00 ERA. His last time out at Dodger Stadium he worked six innings and gave up four earned runs. Freeland has worked at least five innings in his last seven starts.
On the bump for the Cardinals is veteran righty Kyle Gibson, who has started 29 games in his first season with the team. Gibson enters today with a 4.13 ERA over 165 2⁄3 innings. Gibson saw the Rockies on his home turf back in June where he went six innings and gave up three earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts.
