Can Márquez rebound from his last outing?
The Colorado Rockies will once again play a doubleheader on Thursday after rain forced the issue in Kansas City on Wednesday.
The 4-18 Rockies have been a little more competitive as of late, showing glimpses of life during their 11-inning loss on Tuesday, but all the pieces aren’t fitting together still. After Ryan Feltner delivered one of the best outings of the season by a Rockies starter on Tuesday, he will pass the baton to Germán Márquez, who is looking to rebound from his last outing.
Márquez (0-3, 8.27 ERA) is coming off his worst start of the season when he couldn’t get out of the first inning on April 16 against the Dodgers. He gave up seven runs on six hits, including homers by Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman, with one walk and one strikeout. It was tied for the shortest outing of his career. The Rockies are looking for their first win when he’s on the mound just as much as he is looking for his first win on the season. He’s also closing in on 1,000 career strikeouts, which is something to look for today.
Michael Lorenzen was initially slated to throw opposite Márquez before the delay but he will instead get pushed to Game 2 of the afternoon. Instead, the Royals (10-14) will send Cole Ragans (1-1, 3.58 ERA) to the mound. Ragans has been a revelation for the Royals since they acquired him from the Texas Rangers in 2023 and signed him to a three-year, $13.25 million extension in February. He was roughed up in his last start against the Detroit Tigers, giving up five runs on six hits in four innings of work. He had allowed just two runs over his previous two starts in 13 2⁄3 innings of work. He can rack up the strikeouts, tallying 42 in his 27 2⁄3 innings of work. The Rockies better be careful.
It’s also worth noting that reliever Juan Mejia was added as the 27th man today after his excellent start to the season in Triple-A and looks to make his big league debut today.
