Rockies will try to avoid a sweep in the City of Brotherly Love
It’s been a rough series for the Colorado Rockies (1-4) as they look to salvage a game against the Philadelphia Phillies (4-1) in today’s rubber match.
The Rockies offense has struggled mightily, recording just two runs, both of which came via a home run from catcher Hunter Goodman. Strikeouts have plagued the offense with 27 combined strikeouts in the series’ first two games while they have mustered just six walks. Kris Bryant finally tallied his first hit of the season, but he is 1-for-14 to start the year while guys like Ezequiel Tovar are 3-for-20 and Michael Toglia is 1-for-19. The offense has been lacking and they’ll need to start showing signs of life before Friday’s home opener at Coors Field.
The pitching on the other hand has been top-notch, specifically the starting pitching. The Rockies have a 1.61 ERA in the rotation and will look to keep things rolling behind Antonio Senzatela (0-0, 0.00 ERA). Senzy’s last outing wasn’t exactly pristine but it was historic. Facing the Tampa Bay Rays he coughed up nine hits over 4 1⁄3 innings with two walks and no strikeouts, but managed to escape without giving up any runs, thanks to some stellar defensive play behind him. The Phillies are certainly a more dangerous lineup and Senzatela will have to be careful with the amount of contact he tends to give up.
The Phillies will counter with right-hander Taijuan Walker making his first start of the season. Walker struggled last season, posting a 7.10 ERA in 83 2⁄3 innings over 19 appearances. Those struggles were evident in spring training where he posted a 7.41 ERA in five starts. However, it’s worth noting he has traditionally struggled in spring training in his career since 2022. He’s always been able to spin the ball well to get punchouts, but his command has faltered over the last couple of seasons, leading to an increase in walks.
